Waterblack was formed in 1996 by five friends in Limassol, Cyprus. Of the original five, Andreas Economides and Chris Charalambides still remain as the core of the band. In the early years, Waterblack performed cover songs at venues across the island while developing their own material.
The band relocated to London in 1998, performing mainly in London while continuing to hold live performances in Cyprus when possible. In 2000 Waterblack put together an EP of six songs, recording them at SAE studios in London. The EP called Humble Parades included the songs M, Orem, Burdened Youth and Vigilance and
recieved airplay in Greece and Cyprus.
In 2006 Waterblack began recording their first studio album called Orem at SoundScape Studios in Limassol. The album included songs written from as early as 1996 through to 2005. It was released in 2007 and in the same year received awards from garageband.com for production, lyrics, vocals and mood.
During 2007, Jonny Vatikiotis (Guitar) and Marco Economides (Drums) joined Waterblack on a permanent basis, having previously worked with the band on various recordings. In 2009, Byron Athinodorou (Bass) joined, becoming the latest member of Waterblack.

'All the songs on Orem were recorded live as a band and then overdubbed to keep the live feel. The aim was to use as least layers as possible, keeping the raw garage band sound. This was also achieved by the choice of analogue outboard gear along with microphone placement of guitars, bass, and especially drums.
We wanted the listener to hear a produced sound, while being careful not to sound overproduced. There is a distinct analogue hiss in the songs that was deliberately kept, again aiming towards a raw feel. We used a combination of solid state and tube guitar amplifiers in order to achieve the rich blend of sounds, without having to layer them. The sound design and keyboards were kept to a minimum, complimenting the rest of the music. These extra production elements are for the listeners who enjoy analyzing the music in more depth.
Eco has a very distinct tone of voice and an especially unique style of performing the songs. We knew that it was going be a one-take vocal recording as he sings at his best when he performs the whole song as a story so that's exactly what we did.
Generally speaking the production was very tricky because we had to combine a raw band sound with new electronic FX, along with
modern production techniques. Waterblack is a band that performs with a lot of feeling and mood, as opposed to a technical performance, and that was something vital we had to emphasize in the production.'
Marco
'When I was first introduced to the music in 2008, I felt an immediate connection to the songs, not just melodically, but also in terms of lyrical content and the general underlying concepts. Given the context of the music, I knew that being a part of Waterblack would allow me to express myself musically and contribute to the sound. Over the last two years I feel that I have developed a close relationships with the other members, both musically and personally, and this really counts when we are on stage.'
Byron
'Joining the band was something that I had been waiting quite a long time for. This is a chance for me and the band to get to know each other as performers and move on as one. Im sure that the other guys will have a lot to share, as I have too.'
Jonny
'Our first performance was a completely refreshing experience and I knew straight away I was in the right place with the right people at the perfect time. The excitement and energy of the audience filled me with a feeling that I could do absolutely anything I wanted and it would work. Every time I get on stage there is this great sensation of freedom which a lot of people in this world never get to experience so I'm thankful for every opportunity I get to play with Waterblack. Its only possible because of the original nature and passion of the songs that continually allow you to search for and gain new experiences.'

'Every gig we feel the band progressing and this enables us to enjoy performing even more. We are always trying to rehearse as much as possible, always testing new ideas, always trying to improve.'

For the first 3 years he played drums until the band decided to begin playing original material. By then Andreas had developed his guitar and vocal skills and started performing his own material, eventually becoming the vocalist of Waterblack.
