Waterblack is an alternative rock band based in London. Hailing from Cyprus, the band’s first album Orem won several awards from MTV Ourstage and made numerous radio & TV appearances across Cyprus & the UK. Waterblack’s songs are graceful and haunting, exploring social and mental health issues amidst intimate textures and sonic landscapes.
Founders, Andreas and Chris, have been writing songs together since they were at school, drawing influences from alternative, grunge and rock genres. Andreas began singing from a young age and taught himself to play the guitar and drums. As well as a lyricist, singer and songwriter, Andreas is a psychotherapist and his intricate lyrics often reflect his interest in psychology. Chris taught himself piano by the age of 10 and began composing and arranging his own works. He studied sound engineering at SAE London and is the co-writer and arranger of Waterblack’s music. Chris has arranged and produced songs for many artists and is one of the most widely known producers in Cyprus.
Marcos began playing the drums at age 11. He was initially self-taught and later trained with a jazz teacher and at DrumTech in London. Marcos also records as a session drummer for a variety of artists. Byron studied guitar, bass and music theory from a young age and later learned to play the euphonium and trombone. He then studied music composition in Greece and at York University.
Emotional, raw and unforgiving, their debut album ‘Orem' is about hiding and finding oneself, about shame and acceptance, and about not fitting in. The album secured Waterblack a loyal fanbase. Their second album The Pier, has been five years in the making and the band are currently preparing for live performances in 2020.
